The Unfiltered Story Behind Legacy Steel Buildings
The Steel Building Industry’s Dirty Little Secret
Let’s cut the crap.
Most steel building suppliers today don’t care about your build. They care about your deposit.
They’ll promise you a structure “in stock” that hasn’t even been engineered yet. They’ll ghost you once the payment clears. They’ll leave you scrambling with missing plans, wrong specs, or no clue what’s required for your site.
We’ve watched this industry get lazier, sloppier, and more obsessed with squeezing every nickel out of the contractor — while doing less and less to actually help them succeed.
That’s why we started Legacy Steel Buildings.
Not to be just another name in the game — but to rewrite the rules completely. Because we believe contractors deserve real answers, real support, and real damn buildings that show up on time.
The Moment That Pushed Us Over the Edge
It wasn’t one moment — it was hundreds. One bad blueprint. One missing framed opening. One job site we had to explain, again, why the supplier hadn’t delivered what they promised.
But the final straw? A contractor in the middle of nowhere. Four hours from the nearest city. Pouring slab based on anchor bolt plans that were dead wrong. The building? Still hadn’t been cut. The supplier? Disconnected his phone.
That was it. We’d had enough.
After four decades in this business — building, selling, installing, quoting, and cleaning up messes — we realized something: the industry wasn’t broken. It was just being run by the wrong people.
So we built Legacy. Not to fit in, but to stand up. To fix what others won’t. And to give honest builders a real partner they can count on — one who actually shows up.
Who We Are — A Legacy Built by Builders
We’re not a lead gen site. We’re not a call center. And we’re sure as hell not here to collect commissions and disappear.
John Barber has been in this industry since 1984. He helped grow Sunward Corporation. He launched Regency Steel. He built Premier Steel. And now he runs Factory Steel Overstock. He’s recruited dealers, trained builders, led sales teams, and quoted more steel buildings than most “consultants” have ever touched.
Sean Hakes brings 20 years of boots-on-the-ground experience — running Dream Home Innovations, a Colorado-based design/build firm. He’s worked with steel building dealers across the country. He’s led marketing, design, lead gen, and strategy for some of the biggest names in the space. And unlike most marketers, he’s actually worn a hard hat and hauled rebar.
Together, we’ve built Legacy to be the company we wish existed when we were still on the other end of the phone — honest, informed, and damn good at what we do.
What We Do (and What We Don’t)
At Legacy Steel Buildings, we design and deliver pre-engineered steel building kits across the U.S. Barndos. RV garages. Riding arenas. Commercial shops. Agricultural storage. If it’s made of steel and engineered to code — we’ll build it.
In Colorado, we take it further. We offer full turnkey service — site prep, engineering, permitting, erection, and finishing. Licensed GC. In-house architect. Structural engineer. All under one roof.
We also support a growing network of dealers across the country. We provide marketing tools, engineering support, fast quoting, and honest, real-world service that helps them win jobs and serve their customers better.
Here’s what we don’t do:
- We don’t charge dealer fees or monthly “access” plans.
- We don’t lie about inventory to snag a deposit.
- We don’t ghost you the minute the contract is signed.
- We don’t send buildings without verifying code requirements first.
We’re not here to chase the sale. We’re here to deliver the damn building — and make sure you’re proud to put your name on it.
The Dealer-First Model: Why We Serve Builders
We didn’t build Legacy for consumers. We built it for contractors — the ones getting their hands dirty, pulling permits, and answering client calls after hours.
You’re the face of the job. The one people trust. And you deserve a steel building supplier who treats you like a partner — not a number in a CRM.
At Legacy, our dealers don’t pay to play. There are no signup fees, no forced leads, no “preferred tiers.” If you’re serious about selling, building, and delivering steel buildings the right way, we’ll back you 100%.
We give you stamped plans, spec support, design help, co-op marketing, and fast quoting. You get your name on the job — not ours. That’s the deal.
We don’t need credit. We need closers. And when you win? We win.
Why Trust Legacy?
Trust isn’t something you ask for. It’s something you prove — job after job, build after build, year after year. And that’s exactly what we’ve done.
- 40+ years of combined steel building leadership
- Thousands of projects completed across 48 states
- In-house team: licensed general contractor, structural engineer, and architect
- Real-world designs built to spec, on time, and to code
- Documented results — not just pretty renderings
When you work with Legacy, you’re not just ordering a building. You’re gaining a partner who knows the difference between a “good enough” quote and a permit-ready package. A team who’s been on real job sites. And a company that gives a damn whether you succeed.
You won’t find our team on a yacht. You’ll find us in steel-toe boots, reviewing anchor bolt plans with a framer who’s trying to beat the weather.
